Company Overview

Perennially ranked the top public university in New England, the University of Connecticut now stands among the best public institutions in the nation. UConn’s main campus in Storrs is admitting the highest-achieving freshmen in University history. Student diversity continues to increase, as does the number of honors students, valedictorians and salutatorians who consistently make UConn their top choice.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at UConn. More than half of all University of Connecticut undergraduates are CLAS majors. More than 80,000 alumni are CLAS graduates. The college has more than 600 faculty members, with external grant funding of more than $33 million a year. Twenty-four faculty are Board of Trustees Distinguished Professors. We have more than 13,300 undergraduates which represents 62% of the undergraduate UConn student body. More than 1700 CLAS graduate students make up 53% of all the PhDs awarded at UConn.

As the academic core of the University, the College’s goal is to provide a liberal arts and sciences education that ranks among the best in the nation. Its mission is to create and disseminate knowledge in the natural, physical, and social sciences and the humanities, and to help students acquire the skills and knowledge to become independent thinkers, lifelong learners, and responsible citizens.

Faculty research provides the foundation for the College’s educational mission. As scholarly researchers, faculty members advance our understanding of nature and society. They provide a model for students, training them in the process of independent inquiry.

Company History

The College was established with 17 departments in 1939 as one of seven divisions of the newly named University of Connecticut. Before that, courses were offered in the Division of Arts and Sciences in what was known as Connecticut State College.
